Is Markwayne Mullin a “real” Cherokee, or is he a “Pretendian?” Is he good for the Cherokee people? Will he be a good leader for the Department of Homeland Security? Not surprisingly, the answer depends on whom you ask. Here are two very different views, one by a writer who is, like Rep. Mullin, a citizen of the Cherokee Nation – the largest tribe in the US that has met the requirements for federal recognition – and the other a citizen of the United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians, the smallest of the three federally recognized Cherokee tribes.
