Lisa Lefler wrote this jewel of Cherokee wisdom in collaboration with her longtime friend and colleague Tom Belt, citizen and beloved elder of the Cherokee Nation. The final paragraph offers up our assignment, as people of the settler-colonizer culture, to find a better future for all beings:” It takes a concerted effort and a good amount of time to engage Indigenous elders and speakers of their language to develop culturally appropriate models of prevention and intervention for communities. But the time, energy, and effort would be well worth it to develop programs that are finally effective in addressing health disparities and issues of social and environmental justice. The solutions to these problems lie within these communities, not outside. We all strive for peace of mind and well-being. But we will have to ‘be still’ and listen to move forward in humility and value our common ground.”
